Click to see upgrade with new water system: Brooder Box Upgrade
A brooder box is a place to first keep your chicks under the heat lamp at around 95 degrees for the first few weeks. Here I made a simple one out of an old pallet crate that was going to be thrown away. It is about 7 feet long and 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall. I simply and cheaply added some hinged doors and built up the middle to hang the heat lamp (needs to be about 18 inches high) out of some old barn lumber. One side has poultry netting over it to allow some fresh air and the other side is closed off to stay warm. This box held over 100 chicks for the first 3 weeks!
